What's gone wrong? To some extent, Harvard students are just falling in with broad societal trends. We scorn religion, as Stephen Carter has recently written in A Culture of Disbelief. We are a "nation of victims" (Charles Sykes) that converses in "right talk" (Mary Ann Glendon). We live in a culture of entitlement with an ideology of self-interest that dupes us into ignoring what we know is right...

...girl at Rydell High, Sandy Dumbrowski (Susan Wood). After her summer romance with high school hot-shot Zuko, he ignores her in front of his gang of delinquent buddies. She is improbably accepted by the Pink Ladies, the school's group of wilder women, despite their scorn for her virginal bobby-sox image. The acting is competent but no one shines. With its aggressive scorn for Ronald Reagan and Republicanism; for Mormons and moralizing; and its demonic view of lawyer- dealmaker Roy Cohn, a gay-bashing closet gay and a top-level G.O.P. influence peddler for more than three decades, Angels disproved truisms about the unmarketability of political drama. Instead it compellingly reasserted the theater...
