...well. Despite Robert Altman’s snub from the Directors Guild of America (DGA), I’m confident that his multiple honors for Gosford Park (from the Globes, the AFI, and the New York critics, among others) are a sufficient bellwether for an Oscar nod. Ridley Scott??s DGA and AFI nominations for his command of Black Hawk Down’s chaotic battle sequences also make him a probable nominee. David Lynch has an outside shot for bringing an impeccable assuredness to the surreal Mulholland Drive, as does In theBedroom’s Todd Field...
...which makes the success of Scott??s new album all the more imperative and all the more impressive. Her arrival a couple of minutes into the second track, “Long Walk,” is heralded by the deeply felt and sung line, “You’re here / I’m pleased / I really dig your company,” which sets the tone for the entire live disc. Maybe one telling detail in this equation is the way Scott??s relationship died out with his bank-telling golden girl. The year was drawing to a close, and Scott??s wide range of activities and farewell dinners kept making it harder for him to make those visits to the bank. Now, settled in another city, in one of those coveted e-recruiting super-jobs, Scott can only reflect on his days dating an “unmarriageable” bank buddy...
