...paramilitary death squads to bully and assassinate workers from Colombia's Sinaltrainal food industry union, silencing demands for better working conditions. They allege that nine Coca-Cola bottling employees have been murdered over the past 12 years. Union leaders accuse bosses of allowing paramilitaries access to the plants to scrawl graffiti on the walls and intimidate workers. "We're living in anguish and terror," says Sinaltrainal president Luis Javier Correa, himself the target of death threats. "Coca-Cola has an ethical and moral commitment to its workers and we're trying to make it accountable." Coca-Cola denied any responsibility...
...incident is independent, so far, of the probe in Boca Raton. But at least two of the incidents appear to be related: the letter to the Times and one of two sent to NBC both had St. Petersburg, Fla., postmarks, and both were addressed in a similar unsteady scrawl. Neither appeared to contain anthrax, however; the infectious letter at NBC turned out to be a different envelope, with a Trenton, N.J., postmark. The Times letter is being retested, since overnight assays like the one that initially cleared it are sometimes wrong. After three inconclusive tests, in fact, the Microsoft letter...
...sand hill and fly over the ridge, trailing a cloud of sand to a crunching back-front touchdown, it's all too apparent I missed my calling. I bounce along the ridges at 70 km/h, graffiti-ing the sand left and right with an exuberant four-wheeled scrawl. Leaning in and cresting another ridge, dodging stray camels and shrubs, I glimpse an endless sea of pristine dunes to pulverize. Even after I'm beckoned in and take off my helmet, I can't swallow my grin. Perera explains I'm merely the latest in a long line to go buggy...
...fading ocher smears of mountain goats and jellyfish. Much of the art has been damaged, some by Islamic fundamentalists on a Taliban-like crusade to chisel the world into compliance with their interpretation of religious law. But most of the embellishments are by tourists. "Loulou," one writes. Most scrawl dates. A German tells Keenan he likes "the way in which 'modern artists' had made their own contributions to the sites." Keenan's subsequent rants take Sahara Man far off the Tuareg trail. He has already gone in search of things that don't interest the Tuareg...
...digress. Worms and viruses like this are a fact of online life. The moment you have a vast global network, you have people gleefully trying to scrawl graffiti all over it (such as Code Red's inane scribble "hacked by Chinese!!!"). It's human nature. The good thing is that in the long run this makes the system stronger through the act of resistance. That's also human (or rather, Darwinian) nature...
