When the sideshow curtain is flung back, revealing Merrick for the first time, the camera slowly zooms toward Hopkins as his mouth hangs open and his eyes stare unblinking. He suppresses a scream and then a wince as horror replaces terror and sorrow replaces horror on his face. Later, when Treves displays Merrick before the audience of physicians, he must describe, in detail, his physical distortions. Hopkins delivers these lines quickly, his short clipped sentences and detached, analytical tone fighting the emotion that threatens to crack his voice...
...might come next. In Jimmie Blacksmith, however, Schepisi imbues his simple close-ups with increasing echoes of horror. Slowly these scenes draw the audience into an ever-widening circle of violence. Sometimes the scenes are frightening. Sometimes not. It is the randomness one fears. One cannot hear a baby scream, or watch someone mixing soup for dinner, without feeling tinges of menace. One begins to feel the randomness, the undercurrents which one tries so hard to ignore...
...verses. Simon has his occasional missteps--"How the Heart Approaches What It Yearns" is an awkward hook line no matter how cleverly it scans. But the album is more than redeemed by compelling lines like "Who was the witness to the dream/Who kissed my eyes and saw the scream...Nobody...
...MUSIC BOWIE employs on Scary Monsters matches this consciousness of sub-terranean gloom: it is shuddering, dissonant, ponderous, complex. "Scream Like a Baby" opens with a thud from George Murray's bass and a wail from Bowie; then, to a leaden bass drum beat and descending synthesized tones it tells a story of pointless assimilation...
...white-knuckle express. Scott does straightaways at 110 m.p.h. and rarely corners at less than 65 m.p.h. The car seems to be flying out of control. Passengers are jerked around hard as Scott throws the Chevy into bootleg and J turns. Tires scream. Heads (and stomachs) spin. Everyone is scared witless. "This is hardball out here," shouts Scott in the understatement of the week, "but you'll be doing it in a few days." No way, each student groans to himself. But only 10% fail the course...
