...ever emancipated, it would kick up a stir. After all, Bennett, the executive editor of Ebony and the author of such works of black history as Before the Mayflower (1962), has long been one of America's most eloquent voices on racial issues. And the target of his furious screed is perhaps the most revered figure in American history. Putting the two together seemed like a surefire recipe for controversy...
...Bellow writes many philosophical asides into the book. These very brief but highly content-full paragraphs remind us not only of Ravelstein's appetite for all the belles lettres, but also, by proxie, of Allan Bloom's own writing style. In the Closing of the American Mind, the screed on anti-intellectualism and academic nihilism that made him rich and famous,Bloom dispatches most Continental philosophy in a page, and postmodernism in a few short paragraphs. Here was a man who saw in grand narratives but could very easily produce piquant details at the first challenge...
...good job of it themselves. Frank McCourt beautifully juggled contempt and sympathy in his memoir of growing up poor and wet in Limerick in the '30s and '40s, before squandering the goodwill he had accrued with the taint of 'Tis (it'll be a while before that sour screed is filmed). Given his ruling, how can any company of the future know in advance when improving product A is "monopolistic?" Or when serving the consumer is "predatory?" It cannot. And the moral bankruptcy of such schemes is, therefore, akin to all ex post facto legislation. It is no different from any other...
...hacker watchdog John Vranesevich, founder of AntiOnline, calls an "online temper tantrum." Word spread to wired dorms and bedrooms all over the world that U.S. government sites were the target du jour. A group called Masters of Downloading replaced the Senate's home page with its own anti-FBI screed; a Portuguese hacker named M1crochip defaced an obscure Interior Department page and vowed famously (at least for 15 minutes) to "go after every computer on the Net with a [name that ends...
