...KANE and I had a friendly competition going for decades. Whenever he'd talk about the longevity of Batman, I'd ask what he's done lately. Whenever I'd mention a Marvel character, he'd remind me that Batman had been the biggest screen superhero. He was the best kind of friend--always provocative, always fun. He certainly didn't always live by the usual rules. Meeting the ever tardy Kanes for dinner was an adventure. If we were to meet at 8, my wife and I would arrive at 8:30. He'd beat us by arriving...

Woody Allen's Celebrity tracks the former's possibly predictable fall and the latter's entirely unexpected rise within the tensely striving world of Manhattan's media and cultural demimonde. Since Branagh's performance (rather daringly) imitates Allen's anxiously stammering screen persona, and Davis is doing something she has done--expertly--for the writer-director before, playing a jilted, tilted woman, it may sound as if this is yet another of Allen's comically discordant chamber pieces about the impossibility of permanent connection between postmodern urbanites who think too much about themselves and feel too little for each other...

...spies her on stage and escapes his wife for a nighttime tryst. Despite her age, Desiree has not lost her charms, and their ensuing rendez-vous stands out as the most artfully staged and intriguing scene in the play. The audience watches the pair's lovemaking silhouetted through a screen. At the same time, on a different part of the stage, Leonora appears to reminisce about her youth spent manipulating aristocrats and complains that her daughter's methods of seduction lack style. This commentary transforms the couple's reunion into a pathetic act and infuses the play with the odor...

...invisible penguins, fist-fights with Bob Barker and Lunch Lady Land in exchange for a sensitively humorous side, winning the "Best Kiss" with Drew Barrymore at the MTV Awards. This time, uniting with The Wedding Singer director Frank Coraci, the childish, rambunctiously funny Sandler has returned to the silver screen with his usual flair for the idiotic in The Waterboy, an entertaining film that shamelessly milks every ounce of laughter out of a few simple concepts...
