...opting against a Woody Allen-esque presentation in order to give an already highly theatrical piece a more cinematic feel, Guare (who wrote the screenplay) and Schepisi forfeit some of the humor inherent in direct declarations to the audience. Thus, the dramatic aspects of the work leave the most lasting impression in the film. Whereas the comedic "dialogues" with the audience convey the tone of the play, it is the intensely powerful and haunting conversation between Ouisa and Paul which succeeds most gloriously in the film...

Although adapted from the well-received play by William Nicholson, who also wrote the screenplay, "Shadowlands" is not especially profound. Lines meant to awe and move us sound a little hackneyed, as if Nicholson had skimmed through the "religion" entry in Bartlett's Familiar Quotations instead of bothering to read a page or two of Lewis' work. It is essentially a sentimental vehicle for the very solid acting by both Hopkins and Winger...

Clint Eastwood is his counterpart on the "right" side of the law, and it is a regret the screenplay never puts the two characters face to face in a meaningful verbal interchange. ...reveal what happens would be unthinkable, for the surprises in the plot are one of the film's manifold pleasures. Campion has said that in writing the screenplay drew on the Bronte sisters. She is faithful to her inspiration, and the violent unleashing of passions and the consequences that follow are portrayed in a manner that does the author of Wuthering Heights proud. In the world portrayed by Campion, the characters have no defense against the passions that threaten to overtake them. They are foreigners transplanted to a strange new land where the senses rule. Life is overpowering here...

...mother, a Puerto Rican dancer, has been praised for its humor and startling candor. Gomez helped found the Latino comedy group Culture Clash (the troupe has a new series airing on Fox TV, where Gomez has made guest appearances), and she is adapting her show into a screenplay. "I think the essence of my $ work is that I come from some very strong backgrounds -- gay, Cuban, Puerto Rican," says Gomez, "and I don't feel like I don't fit into any one of them...
