...usual, Martin (who wrote the script with Co-Producer Lorne Michaels and Songwriter Randy Newman) plays a fellow with misplaced confidence in his own shrewdness; Chase, for a change, plays a stupid man; Short is pretty much along for the ride, though he has the best actor's moment, choking himself up as he tells some bewildered children about the high point of his life, when Dorothy Gish praised one of his performances. There is a lot of good, broad comedy in Three Amigos!, notably an encounter with a singing bush that knows only public domain songs and Martin...
That spine tingler of a script is, with a certain amount of cinematic license, akin to sweet reality at the 55-acre Hollywood studios of venerable Paramount Pictures, a subsidiary of Gulf & Western. A year ago, the company that distributed one of the first Hollywood feature-length movies (The Squaw Man, 1914) was close to the ropes, its revenues sagging and its film larder practically bare. Today, in the words of Gordon Crawford, senior vice president of Capital Guardian Research, a Los Angeles investment-management firm, "they're having the greatest year of any company in the recent history...
...script sounded more like the ending of a three-hankie Christmas movie than the conclusion of a 74-day political ordeal, well, that's probably just what Daniel Ortega had in mind. By playing Santa Claus, the Nicaraguan President plainly hoped to score points with the American public at a moment when President Reagan's own Yuletide fortunes were looking bleak. "This is our Christmas and New Year's message to the American people from the people of Nicaragua," said Ortega. "It is a message of peace, and couldn't be more concrete." Washington's response was Bah, humbug...
Dennis Feldman's script labors almost as hard to get Murphy to Tibet (where he must seek the abducted "Prince of Light") as it does to place him in conflict with Beelzebub's legions. But it makes little of the comic possibilities in the star's new screen situation. And Director Michael Ritchie, who can be a wonderfully cockeyed social commentator (Smile, The Survivors, Fletch), seems almost as lost as Murphy when he is back of the beyond. They are both men who need to plant their feet firmly in contemporary American reality if they are to deliver their punches...
...role, but Richard Chamberlain finds the idea of playing the world's greatest lover something of an anachronism. "They just don't grow characters like Casanova anymore," he observes. "His kind of life would never happen now, but he is a great deal of fun." No kidding. The script for Casanova, a three-hour abc movie to appear later this season, calls for Chamberlain to seduce such beauties as Faye Dunaway and Sylvia Kristel (Emmannuelle). Nice work if you can cut it, but Casanova may have had an easier time of it. Chamberlain, 51, has to bed all his conquests...
