I wrote it for [Australian film director] John Hillcoat, who wanted me to write about a traveling salesman. I watched this documentary about a 1960s traveling salesman and then I interviewed some of the guys. What emerged was a culture of alcoholism and drug taking and womanizing, and I made an individual character from that...
