Amidst the intensity of Camp's performance, some of the minor characters are obscured. The traitorous trio of Cambridge (Michael Janes), Scroop (Randall Jaynes) and Grey (James Framer) seem particularly flimsy. For the most part, supporting performances are strong. When the trio of traitors--Cambridge, Scroop, and Grey--are sentenced to death, instead of being borne away to their doom they act out in pantomime (to the accompaniment of claves) their impalement on wooden poles by three guards, turning on their knees to the audience with hands upstretched and then collapsing to the ground. Fair enough--but then the whole silent mime is gone through twice more, which is just plain silly...

Even the scenes in The Saga are hauntingly familiar: a garden party that is entertained by the Bidcombe Platinum Band recalls the garden party of Decline and Fall, with its Llanabba Silver Band. And Auberon has both his father's love of fantastic Dickensian names (Percy-Scroop-Beauchamp, Nurse Proudfoot, Mrs. Cod-Finger) and his hilarious sense of incongruity...
