This was what the crowds had come to witness. Jules Verne had the vision more than a century ago. When Western man finally launched himself into space, he foresaw, it would be from Florida's midsection. Men with less foresight saw only a forbidding stretch of sand, scrub and fetid marshland that was bypassed even during the land boom of the 1920s. In the 1950s, recalls Space Reporter Al Volker of the Miami News, the space program was so hushed up that the only way to find out that a shot had taken place was to have a Cocoa...
Utah, the other beach on which U.S. forces landed, is even bleaker than Omaha: a vast expanse of windswept dunes and scrub grass. To Mayor Michel de Vallavielle of nearby Sainte-Marie-du-Mont, the beach is an almost personal possession. "It remains the symbol of liberation," he says. On June 6, 1944, De Vallavielle was mistakenly shot and wounded by American paratroopers, but it did not affect his gratitude to the liberators. Over the years, he has built a small museum in a blockhouse and has seen to it that the original wooden markers naming local roads and paths...
Spotted fever is caused by an unusual microbe, halfway between viruses and bacteria. It is harbored by ticks, which live in scrub and especially around garbage dumps, and gets to man either when a tick lands directly on him for a free mean or-more commonly-when a tick nestles in a dog's fur and transfers later to his master. Either way, the tick's bite gets the microbe into the bloodstream, where it multiplies. It soon causes high fever, splitting headache, severe muscle aches and mental confusion. Many other diseases produce similar symptoms, but spotted fever...
...cavity consciousness reached some sort of peak last week in Monroe County, Ind. In field houses, armories, factories, football stadiums and high school gymnasiums, more than 29,000 people gathered to scrub their teeth for about 21 minutes, as part of a mass "brush-in" to demonstrate the decay-preventing qualities of a new dental paste. The paste, manufactured under the name of Zircate, reportedly guards against cavities for as long as a year-after only one application...
...year, more than the ports of St. Louis, Memphis, Pittsburgh or St. Paul. The new port is also expected to generate 14,000 new jobs and $500 million in investment. But all that must wait until a channel is dug from a big tract of land where cottonwoods, scrub oak and pecan trees now stand. For the present, though, it is rather jarring to see a big white water tower with the legend PORT CITY OF CATOOSA rising above acre after acre of dry, dusty land...
