Every year the U. S. steel industry consumes some 750,000 tons of manganese ore. Some of it comes from Africa where the great manganese mines are on the seaboard, easy to exploit. Early this year was consummated a re-organization of Seaboard Air Line Railway Co., whose 4,500 mi. of track stretch north and south between Richmond and Miami, west between Wilmington and Birmingham.
