...disapproval rating is the most feared disease in politics, rare and highly contagious. Bush contracted it after Katrina stripped his immunity and the germs swept in: Iraq, foreclosures, $4 gas. So you can't blame the GOP for trying to seal away its afflicted leader like the boy in the bubble. From now on, candidates in swing states won't go near him without a mask, gloves and a bottle of Purell. John McCain, the party's nominee, is promising to fumigate Washington. Add one more metaphor of sickness: the lame duck...

...bones tend to fuse in a chronological order, so scans revealing how far along this process has come could provide more information about age. The skull can also be helpful. Babies are born with an unfused cranium and, as children grow up, a series of sutures come together to seal the gap. In some, however, certain sutures remain open through adulthood, making this an important but hardly conclusive test...

...Perhaps the most puzzling scene in the ad is an altered segment from The 10 Commandments that appears near the end. A Moses-playing Charlton Heston parts the animated waters of the Red Sea, out of which rises the quasi-presidential seal the Obama campaign used for a brief time earlier this summer before being mocked into retiring it. The seal, which features an eagle with wings spread, is not recognizable like the campaign's red-white-and-blue "O" logo. That confused Democratic consultant Eric Sapp until he went to his Bible and remembered that in the apocalyptic Book...

...Pacific, and the enemy is just as dangerous as the drug lords Speedman's squad runs into. The actor's agent, Rick Peck (Matthew McConaughey, who nearly ambles away with the picture), worries mainly that his client hasn't been perked with TiVo. But Peck is a baby seal next to studio boss Les Grossman (deliciously played by Tom Cruise as a bald, grotesquely hairy Moloch), whose obscene phone calls usually include the threat to put something big of his into something small of the other fellow's. When Peck learns that Speedman has been captured by the bandits...
