In Brittany it is the time for spring pardons-the old, unique, Breton folk custom that permits the peasant to approach the Deity through various saints, and which means a season of blessings, benedictions, reunions, torchlight parades, holidays, betrothals, marriage contracts, singing, wine and forgiveness...

...there were 28 shows on Broadway. June 1 there were 16. Such a slump is normal enough at season's end, but this year Broadway thought that the New York World's Fair would keep her dolled up in her midwinter ermines. Instead, with New Yorkers scurrying to Flushing and out-of-towners in no rush to get to New York, the Fair has Broadway limping about in rags. Tipton, however, is not Duke's only slugger. This year's team has six .400 batters. So far this season they have won 21 of their 22 games, have averaged n.i runs and 13.2 hits a game-a record even more extraordinary than Duke's undefeated, untied, unscored-on football team...

...world over tuned in on their radios-for the 160th running of The Derby. In the field of 27 three-year-olds, the popular favorite was Lord Rosebery's Blue Peter, a chestnut colt who few weeks before had won the Two Thousand Guineas, first of the season's Big Three races for three-year-olds.† Babbling bookmakers, taking hard-earned bobs from farmers, charwomen, clerks, winked slyly under their bowler hats. A notorious Derby jinx had plagued the Rosebery silks ever since 1905 when the present Earl's father, onetime Prime Minister of England...
