...Prades' Church of St. Pierre in the French Pyrenees, every pew, aisle and choir stall was crammed with hushed listeners. As the last tones of Johann Sebastian Bach's Cantata for Soprano and Bass, No. 32 floated away, there was silence. Then, in an unexpected gesture, the tall, white-haired Bishop of Perpignan arose, raised his hands and gave the first clap, signaling an end to the church ban on applause. As bald little Pablo Casals bowed from the podium, the 2,000 listeners clapped so thunderously that a piece of plaster shook loose from the high roof...
...tiptoes"; "The enquiry into a dream is another dream"; "Love is presently out of breath when it is to go uphill, from the children to the parents." By the time aphorisms became the property of the people, commoners had learned to speak like counts. The humbly born Sebastian Charnfort decided that "whoever is not a misanthrope at 40 can never have loved mankind." Nietzsche's phrases bore a strychnine smile: "The thought of suicide is a great consolation; with the help of it one has got through many a bad night"; "Wit closes the coffin on an emotion...
...momentum never waning, the cast easily metamorphoses during the two-hour Pinafore production: Trial by Jury's defendant, played by Monnen, becomes Pinafore's handsome young hero, Ralph Rackstraw. Crowley assumes another leadership position as the ship's Captain Corcoran, and a newcomer to the evening's spectacle, Sebastian Knowles, plays the pompous Sir Joseph Porter. All three men, along with Craig Bierko as Dick Deadeye and Jo Milroy as Little Buttercup, give the evening's most superb performances. Crowley successively displays the Captain's frustrations in trying to convince his daughter Josephine (Nancy Fatzick) to marry Sir Joseph. Countering...
...Beckwiths invite the boy, Jean-Claude Guerin, to visit them. The tyke(Sebastian Dungan) turns out to be an E.T. figure. His personality is based entirely on his foreignness: Bob's daughter Jessica (Arlene Mclntyre) likes him because he speaks French, and Bob makes the obligatory American attempt to explain baseball to the child. And like E.T., Jean-Claude's very presence causes problems, especially for adults...
...highly professional polish the tradeoff, as usual being some loss of student and House flavor. Three of the five main voices are Boston-area professional musicians; they carry the main musical burden for more than three hours. But in no sense do they overshadow the two undergraduate leads. Sebastian Knowles as Figaro and Nan Hughes as the lovesick pageboy Cherubino. Indeed these two make it obvious that casting professionals is not the only way to go. The valiant, largely student orchestra conducted by Malina and Michael Bank '86 teaches the same lesson; the musicians don't hang together too well...
