...paper that they didn't catch on back home. This true? Can't believe that! Why? Regis? NBC's fault? What'd they show? The events were unbelievable! I think I saw the most important Olympic performance since Jesse Owens. I'll tell you about it in a sec. But everything else, too, was tremendous. The people were lovely, the food was wonderful and this city was beyond belief. The Emerald City...

...sec. Let's go next to... Maurice Greene. Did you see him? He's the showboater, the character, the real piece of work - and this is an image he works hard at. He's the gum-popping, strutting leader of coach John Smith's Handling Speed Intelligently team, a stable of hip-hop sprinters and sundry others who train at UCLA's Drake Stadium and hang together in the off-hours. "My expectations were two gold medals and to break two world records," she said after securing her second gold as part of the 4 x 100-m medley relay. She's a world record short, but time is on her side. "I have at least two more Olympics," she said on Saturday evening, as swimmers from around the world were looking for a party. Quann declared she would be back...

Round 1 went to Australia: a brutal punch thrown by Thorpe at 400 m. In his specialty race, Thorpe lowered his world record and won by something just under a week (actually, by 2.81 sec., with a time of 3:40.59). Round 2 was just as large a mismatch in the women's 4 x 100-m freestyle relay. Australia, after starting hot, cooled to sixth. The U.S. set a world record, and anchor Jenny Thompson, in superb form, won her sixth Olympic gold medal, moving ahead of speed skater Bonnie Blair for most golds ever by an American woman...
