...Brooklyn, two members of a second, probably unrelated Soviet spy ring were sentenced in Manhattan to 5½-year prison terms apiece. The two: Confessed Soviet Spies Myra Soble, 53, and Jacob Albam, 65, who escaped stiffer penalties by being "cooperative" with the U.S. Department of Justice. Already, secret testimony from Myra's husband Jack Soble has fingered two members of the ever-widening ring: onetime U.S. Army Intelligence Officer George Zlatovski and his wife Jane, now in Paris (TIME, July 22). According to U.S. officials, Jack Soble, tempted by the prospect of a lightened sentence, is still talking...
...Carmelo Jurissevich was a tough-minded and tough-sinewed partisan who fought with Tito against the Germans. But being a Croatian peasant who treasured freedom and hated authority, he had no use for Tito's postwar Communist dictatorship. On the inevitable night in 1949 when Tito's secret police came after him, Carmelo and his younger brother Emil fled to Trieste, only a thump ahead of the knock at the door. Columbia scientists, working on an Air Force contract, dodged around this difficulty by altering the quality of the signal itself. Details of the alteration are still secret. But in effect the scientists added an ingredient to the signal that can be readily identified against background interference picked up by their receiver. "It's a lock and key system," explains Dr. John H. Bose of Columbia's Electronics Research Laboratories. "We know what's locked up in the signal, and our receiver...
Nicknamed ORDIR (omnirange digital radar), the new signal technique cannot be applied to existing radar systems. ORDIR's range is still secret, but it will "multiply" the present top range of radar, which can now pick out an airplane at 200-300 miles. In addition, ORDIR's high sensitivity is expected to track such rapid velocity objects as intercontinental missiles and earth satellites. Eventually, aircraft may be equipped with miniaturized ORDIR. But the system is still being developed and refined; no production contracts have been made...
...kleptomania or St. Vitus' dance. He embarrassed the Administration, set off horselaughs and snorts of indignation in the U.S. press, sorely annoyed the Ceylonese, and indelibly marked himself as durable headline material. What was Gluck's offense? He admitted to the Senate Foreign Relations Committee, in secret session, that he could not pronounce the name of India's Prime Minister Jawaharlal (Jah-wah-har-lahl) Nehru or rattle off the name of Ceylon's Prime Minister (Solomon West Ridgeway Dias Bandaranaike...
