...significance this year because the answers will have a vital effect on the U.S. economy. For the answers, TIME correspondents spoke to more than 100 dealers around the country, interviewed potential buyers and Detroit's automakers, peeked under the wraps for a look at some of the still secret '59s. To find out what they learned, why 1959 looks like a big car year, and to get a pictorial sneak preview of the new models, see BUSINESS, Fast Getaway. DIPLOMATS have negotiated about it, politicians have exploited it, editorialists have pondered it. But what is really happening...
Chiang's statements have a basis in fact. The Communists themselves have broadcast evidence of restiveness-although so far they have always been able to control it. Last January Lo Jui-ching, chief of Red China's secret police, casually admitted that in the preceding two years his men had found it necessary to investigate 18 million workers for "counterrevolutionary thoughts," had smashed 3,000 "revolutionary cliques" and uncovered 100,000 active counter-revolutionaries-5,000 of them in the Communist Party itself...

Indeed, the chapters on Nigger and Lord...

It is not, I think, an impressive as the first two hundred pages; there are excellent passages, particularly in the Nostromo chapter, but Guerard does not always reach the high level he maintains in treating the other novels...
...Queen Juliana of The Netherlands walked up for her annual Speech from the Throne with the heavy grace of a Wagnerian diva. Last week a trim, svelte (25 Ibs. lighter) Juliana delivered another royal oration, and the London Sunday Dispatch gleefully revealed what it claimed to be the slimming secret: a bland diet ordered by a fat, fiftyish hair-restorer salesman named Jos de Cock, who runs the "Enorga Institute" in The Hague. After an analysis of strips of litmus paper that a prospective weight loser licks after meals, went the story, De Cock devises a special diet...
