That's still a long way off. The willingness of moderate Sunnis to pursue a political solution could easily crumble if the next government in Baghdad fails to improve conditions in Sunni areas and clamp down on sectarian excesses by Shi'ite militias. And even if the U.S. can lure some guerrillas to the negotiating table, it still faces a seemingly inescapable quandary: so long as U.S. troops are involved in combat in Iraq, there's every reason to believe the insurgency will be able to recruit sufficient numbers of motivated new fighters to do battle with them. Rhode Island...
...certain is that the next head of government will inherit rampant corruption, stagnant oil exports, a crumbling infrastructure, deadly insurgencies (on Friday and Saturday alone, five suicide bombings killed more than 120 people), an Iraqi army riddled with factional militiamen and a police force suspected of conniving in sectarian violence. A case in point is last week's discovery by U.S. forces of 173 prisoners at an Interior Ministry bunker. The majority of them were believed to be Sunni and several reportedly showed signs of torture or starvation. It has only increased the public perception that the Interior Ministry, which...
That kind of paranoia is one reason the U.S. troop presence, while an irritant to many Iraqis, may be the only thing preventing a slide into a sectarian bloodbath. The Bush Administration hopes that increased Sunni political participation will help defuse the insurgency. But elections have proved an insufficient antidote to the violence, and the U.S. and Iraq's new leaders have given sullen Sunnis few tangible reasons to support them. Because of security concerns, the State Department has only one envoy and one staff member from the U.S. Agency for International Development for the whole of Anbar province...
Time did not tell the whole story about Spanish filmmaker Pedro Almodóvar and his portrayals of the gay lifestyle. Far from being a liberal (in the European sense), Almodóvar is a sectarian leftist in mind and soul. His systematic attack against family and religious values is not really intended to "liberate" the homosexuals who live in Spain or to make the country more modern. Almodóvar's attacks aim to undermine the values that fortunately are still the core of Spanish society. I reject the notion that he is changing the world for the better...
...Sectarian Sniping For all its gory detail, "Killers in the Neighborhood," about the death squads in Baghdad [Aug. 29], omitted an important conclusion. The Bush Administration has indeed put unprecedented effort into the war on terrorism, especially in Iraq. But instead of quenching the passion for jihad, the Administration's heavy-handed actions have stoked it. Worse yet, the centuries-old, long-dormant hatred between Shi'ites and Sunnis threatens to spill into a horrendous civil war, with wider implications outside Iraq. And one thing is sure: appointing the same exiled career politicians to power isn't going to solve...
