Steve Lopez's article on the U.S. cities that are the best at what they do was fantastic [BONUS SECTION, July 13]. Every town was treated with respect and consideration. The amusing aspects of each place were made funny, but not a joke. I want to run out right away and see each one of these places because of unique details you brought to light. ...section about Dalton, Ga., the "Carpet Capital," described how the city recruited Mexican teachers in order to attract Mexican workers. I found the condescending manner of some Dalton residents outrageous. You quoted an elderly Southern gentleman as saying, "I know these [Mexican] children are here to stay--as butchers, Realtors, car salesmen, physicians." Of course, the "physicians" remark was gratuitous. This man's attitude only reflects the fact that while the Hispanic population in the U.S. may be growing, our children are destined only to service the country's middle class unless they are better educated. So start with the hurt, back when comic-actor-author-ad pitchman Chris Rock was li'l Chris from Bed-Stuy, just another black kid from a poor black neighborhood bused to another poor section of New York City because the school there was mostly white. ...after lots of crunching noises, the computer booted in something ominously called "safe mode." I phoned Sony's 24-hour help line, but the help guy had never heard of FunMail. Luckily, the manual's troubleshooting section allowed me to diagnose a hardware conflict and explained how to cure it. But when at last I fired up FunMail, the final half-second of any message I recorded repeated itself, as in "Seltzer boy! boy!" A Sony spokesman said I was the first person to report the bug. I am not surprised. At least I didn't lose any tools...
