...Scandinavian monarch is greeted by his subjects with no servility, no boot-licking but with the affectionate bonhomie that a Protestant layman might show to an amiable Bishop of his sect. Last week Denmark's giant-tall King Christian X, on one of his daily horseback jaunts through Copenhagen's busiest streets, was not surprised when a passing truck driver waved him a cheery salute. Back waved King Christian, and at that moment his horse, young and excitable, suddenly reared, fell down. Beneath the horse one of the King's legs was pinioned and anxious bystanders rushed...
Many a U. S. church, when in need of money, knows of philanthropists who are good for a touch. But rare is the touchee available to more than one sect. Thus last week the richest man in Bartlesville, Okla. (pop. 14,763) made news by paying off the debts of the town's five principal churches. He, President Frank Phillips of Phillips Petroleum Corp., a Methodist, had last Christmas directed the town's leading banker to investigate local church finances. Last week, while other Oklahomans were debating whether Judas hanged himself on a redbud tree, Oilman Phillips quietly...
Like Christianity, Buddhism includes many a sect. One of the more potent is the Jodo-shinshu sect, founded in Japan 700 years ago. Month ago in the Hompa Hongwanji Temple in Kyoto, Japan, Abbot Otani, head of the sect, blessed a two-foot image of Lord Buddha, carved of wood and covered with eight layers of gold leaf. Last week an envoy of Abbot Otani arrived in San Francisco with the image, turned it over to Rinban, or Bishop, Kenju Masuyama, the Occidental-looking head of some 50,000 U. S. members of the Jodo-shinshu sect...
...gathered at Fellowship dinners under the auspices of 20,000 city and village churches. Perhaps 1,500,000 or more were. To them went the voices of Dr. Jones, about to return to his labors as a missionary in India, who urged his favorite idea: that all the sects form a Church of Christ, with each sect represented as a "Branch." Mr. Rockefeller, who would belong to the Baptist Branch but who has publicly announced he will give no more millions to sectarian enterprises (TIME, Nov. 25, 1935), voiced his agreement with Dr. Jones. Saying nothing about the Million Unit...
...Farming Mennonites voluntarily reduced acreage in accordance with the Act's spirit but put their names to nothing accepted no benefits (TIME, March 18, 1935). In Lancaster, Pa. last week the Mennonite Board of Missions revealed that the new Social Security Act is equally incompatible with the sect's tenets. The Board wrote the Philadelphia office of the Social Security Board declaring that, although Mennonites will gladly pay the taxes the law demands, they would rather not accept old-age pensions when they fall due. An attorney for the Board wrote back to the Mennonites that this would...
