Starting with review by the editor of Atlantic's impressive past, in which the mystical names of James Russell Lowell, Bliss Perry, Ellery Sedgwick, Thomas Bailey Aldrich, and William Dean Howells figure as editors, the issue goes on to new material by past contributors. Frost, Marquand, Hemingway, Thurber, Berenson, Morison, Isak Dinesen, President Conant, Jung, Slichter, Niebuhr, Osbert and Edith Sitwell, Auden, Wilder, McGinley, R. P. Lister, and the late Max Beerbohm march with deserved pomp and circumstance through the table of contents...
Edward Weeks, 59, a slim, hawk-nosed New Jerseyite of good schooling (Cornell, Harvard, Cambridge) and filigree style, has been the Atlantic's editor for 19 years, longer than all but his immediate predecessor, the celebrated Ellery Sedgwick. But labor had its mind mostly on the Democratic primary (see below), hardly at all on Hall: industrial Sedgwick County (Wichita) gave Shaw 3,500 more votes than Hall, Shawnee County (Topeka) went to Shaw by 3,200. The final unofficial vote: Shaw 156,300, Hall...
Here was an excellent chance to give some game experience to players from whom will have to be picked the first elevens of next year and the year after. Why should this chance be wasted in a headline-hunting and unsportsmanlike effort to run up the score? Sedgwick W. Green...
