...Texas, Whip Paddy Boland of Scranton, Pa., delivered the South bound-and-gagged to the New Deal. John McCormack broke a long and agonized silence on the embargo-repeal issue to deliver only a speech. In it he demanded that the U. S. recall its Ambassador from Moscow (see p. 15). Score at week's end: Warren I, McCormack...
Middlemen. House histrionics, the 1940 political situation, and the network of Washington intrigues meant little to one suffering group of U. S. citizens. All the shipping lines could see were the angular lines of the combat areas defined by the President, wherein no U. S. ship may deliver goods of any sort on penalty of $50,000 fine, five years in prison or both (see map). Through these forbidden seas lay the eight trade routes of 92 U. S. ships, with a Government investment of $195,061,000, an annual gross revenue of $52,500,000. There was plenty...
...United Mine Workers (before C. I. O. was formed), with A. F. of L.'s Founder Sam Gompers, with many another Laborite and politico, impersonal Author Green tells almost nothing. Mr. Green was dedicating a monument to the Ludlow martyrs of 1914 when a closed car drew...

R., in which Franklin Roosevelt shared last week (see p. 15). The Browder speech last week was the first realistic thing which he and his party have done since the Stalin & Hitler marriage of convenience. But Browder and friends, free again to take up their old cries of international class war, down-with-capitalism, etc., were not in an altogether happy position. To portray Joseph Stalin's totalitarian regime as the flower...
...Premier-Foreign Commissar Viacheslav Molotov elaborated on the same theses in an address in the Moscow opera house. He specially re-emphasized Russian neutrality, U. S. S. R.'s "policy of peace." Meantime, Finland, further tightening her defenses, clapped on mail censorship, cut off foreign telephones, waited to see if peaceful Russia would be as good as her protestations (see below...
