After four hours of deliberation, a jury convicted Francisco Martin Duran of trying to assassinate President Clinton on Oct. 29. The 26-year-old Duran is scheduled to be sentenced on June 29 and faces life in prison. His lawyers plan to seek a new trial but did not tell reporters on what grounds. Duran, who was portrayed by his defense as a paranoid schizophrenic, was also convicted of assaulting four Secret Service officers, unlawful possession of a rifle and a shotgun, damaging federal property, using a weapon during a crime of violence and transporting a firearm across state lines...

Three-term Alabama Sen. Howell Heflin said he would not seek re-election next year, bringing to four the number of Senate Democrats who plan to retire. In a speech on the Senate floor, the 73-year-old former chief justice of the Alabama supreme court, who has suffered from a series of medical problems, said "the time to pass the torch to another generation is near." Heflin's decision makes it tougher for Democrats to strengthen their 54-46 Senate minority in the 1996 elections (Alabama is now largely Republican). At least three Democrats -- Sens.
