...common contentious attitude of counsel in a lawsuit, and the common attitude of the judge as the umpire in a game, have done much to discredit the administration of justice in the United States. Counsel do not seem to the American public to be officers of a court seeking for truth and justice, but players of an unethical, intellectual game. The judge seems to regard himself--often perforce as a mere umpire between contending parties, and not as an agent of the commonwealth to settle controversies on their merits. The American public has lost some of its old faith...

...foundation of the Harvard press calls attention to the considerable and increasing place in the field of publishing which is being taken by the universities. Fashions spread so fast that it will perhaps not be long before a printing press will seem as indispensable to an ambitious university as a gymnasium, and the literary "output" will become as important as the number of students in attendance. The trade publishers will not suffer, for universities are not given to producing "best sellers," and most of their books a publisher could not well afford to bandle. Yet in addition to publishing records...

Amherst was the first to tally after 5 minutes of play on a shot by Jones made possible by weak defensive work. During the early part of the contest, the University could not seem to find its gait. Shortly afterward, Phillips scored again from a half-scrimmage. Then...

Tonight the University hockey team meets Amherst Agricultural College in the Arena at 8.15 o'clock. Last week the Pilgrim A. A., composed largely of last year's Intercolonial players, easily defeated this team, and it would seem likely that the University team will not have a very difficult match tonight...

...next article is "The Growing Science of Efficiency," by Holbrook F. J. Porter, reprinted from "Business America," October number. He gives a readable account of the meaning, scope, and progress of a subject now justly arousing great interest. Like the general run of such writers and speakers, he seems entirely oblivious of the fact that the science of efficiency has a field of application in the field of what the economists call the distribution of wealth, as well as in the production of wealth. We can already produce far more efficiently--poorly as we may do it still--than...
