...hrer Hitler took Memel last week with enough flourish to make it seem valuable. It is not. The district is a homespun, colorless countryside 1,099 square miles in area bounded by East Prussia, the Baltic Sea and Lithuania. The population is a piddling 152,000, some 78% of them claimed by Germany. Memel has no industries important enough for the Nazis to boast of and Germany has many better ports. To Lithuania, however, it represents one-sixth of her industry, and it was the nation's only good outlet to the sea. With Memel gone, Lithuania...

...sized Norwegian elkhound; equipped with fright wig and false fangs. Instead, Associate Producer Gene Markey, perhaps in the delightful confusion attendant on his recent marriage to Hedy Lamarr, put his O.K. on a friendly old Great Dane named Chief, who, despite all his yelpings, cannot even make his bark seem worse than his bite...

French producers have not been obliged to resort to any such spectacular embellishments. Pictures like Club de Femmes, La Maternelle, Forty Little Mothers, Ballerina, make it apparent that French producers are interested in seminaries, kindergartens and sewing circles solely on their own merits, that they...
