...Newell crews were delayed in their work after getting on the water by lack of shells. Their early practice was entirely in barges and they seem to have profited by it. The first boat has at stroke Boardman, who rowed last year on the winning interscholastic crew; he has come up lately from the third crew during the illness of Pier and is doing promising work. Ayer at 7 rowed 3 on the Roxbury Latin crew last spring. He and McGrew at 6 are heavy and powerful men and Ayer is an especially reliable oar both in blade and body...

...candidates for third base, G. C. Clark, Ewer and Clay show most promise. Judging from their work in the cage, Clark and Ewer seem likely to become good hitters. Ewer, however, is handicapped by being left-handed. Clay is still weak at batting, and both he and Clark are somewhat slow. ...move frequently from one university to another. He points out that although the broadening advantages of this movement are many, especially to the smaller universities, yet one bad feature exists in that both students and universities are, "perhaps, somewhat distracted from simplicity and directness of aim." Yet these disadvantages "Seem to be only those incidental to any progressive condition and to be greatly out weighed by the gains reaped by both students and universities." "From a Graduates' Window" comes a remarkably well-informed and vigorous protest against the "athletocracy" that has sprung up in the great body of past athletes...

...football practice this spring, or early in the fall, as may seem best to the captain of the eleven and the coaches, three silver cups will be offered to men eligible for next year's eleven for contests in punting, drop and place kicking. The contests will be conducted by the coaches, and accuracy, quickness, height, placing and distance will all be considered. The cups will be the property of the winners, and similar cups will be offered again...
