Philadelphia's municipal finances are in a bad way. All Philadelphia knows it; few Philadelphians seem to care. The city's gas plant is in hock to RFC. Its public libraries can afford to replace only 20,000 of 85,000 dog-eared books which are thumbed to tatters each year. More than a third of Philadelphia's annual revenues go to service old debts. Expensive subways, promoted during the heedless '203, are sealed and empty catacombs; Philadelphia lacked the money to run them or to pay for them...

Scenting news. Fleet Street has sent reporters to interview London harpies, some of whom seem to have been upset by the twittering from the shires. At the Cabaret Club, the London Daily Express found "a great big, graceful, healthy girl," Miss Eunice Allman, who explained that her work consists in "soothing bruised egos," begged, "If you're writing about us, don't make us out to be the scum of the earth. Destry Rides Again is charged with enough buckaroo comedy* and sheer animal spirits to keep cinemaudiences chortling even when there is nothing to laugh at, makes even the widely advertised Dietrich v. Merkel hair-pulling match (the closest the picture comes to being vulgar) seem just a romp. As entertainment, Producer Pasternak's western, with hardly more pretensions than a cow town, is likely to be voted best of the year...

...crucial points. But persons who are more interested in religions as a whole than in denominations, think that we have a distinctive mission . . . . The drift of the times is away from further sectarianism and towards interdenominationalism and even formal Church unions. Our nonsectarian character, therefore, would not seem to unfit us for the future...
