...following plan has been suggested for the exercises about the Class Tree. It has been proposed that instead of the scrimmage, to which there seems to be so much objection, there should be a shower of flowers from the Tree upon the heads of the Seniors as they stand grouped about it. This would seem to be a pretty certain cheek upon all combinations and unnecessary disorder; and, on the other hand, the old flower tradition would be retained and the mementos prized as highly as ever...
That such would be the outcome of the proposed extension is the opinion not only of the writer, but of many Seniors, and, it would seem, of most graduates. Out of nine alumni recently consulted on this question,- of the classes of '41, '46, '50, '61, '64, '68, '81, '83, and '84,- only two favored the proposed change; the rest were unanimous in their belief that a longer celebration than has hitherto been customary would inevitably be more elaborate, more expensive, and, in general, such that the poor man would be sharply divided from the rich; and Class Day would...
...committee of the Corporation seem to have taken an interesting stand in relation to the Tree exercises on Class Day. Let us hope their decision is not past reconsideration...
...objectionable features, however, which have crept into the exercises since the introduction of the class member,- these might easily be removed without destroying the essential value of the affair, which is nothing more than a good-natured, rough-and-tumble scrimmage. It would seem that the suggestion of the Class Day Committee to dispense with the number, and also to lower the wreath, would do away with all offensive roughness, and the necessity of forming large combinations in order to obtain the flowers...
