...which the play is drenched (there are over a hundred references to blood in the text alone). In the settings, for which Mr. Hays is also responsible, the color of blood makes several appearances: in the castle hangings, in the royal carpet, in the two thrones (though these last seem to suggest the red lacquer of China rather than the rough furniture of medieval Scotland). Marie Day has designed suitable costumes; and Richard Baldridge has devised musical and sound effects, for percussion or bagpipes, that are more primitive than one normally finds in a Shakespearean production--but then I suppose...
Despite the fact thaat some of the dialogue is quite dated now, Kaufman's satiric wit bites through like a whiplash, and such lines as "Marriage isn't a career. It's an incident!'" are timelessly funny. The Tufts players seem to be having a wonderful time doing this period piece, and it makes enjoyable watching...
Surprisingly, the poets seem to be least at ease while draped in their own literary garlands, e. e. cummings wanders through selections from his Him and Santa Claus (Caedmon) with the air of a sleepwalker groping in a murky crypt; John Masefield sibilates waveringly through his The Story of Ossian (Argo) in a reading that does nothing to relieve the poem's turgid dramatic flow. "She did not change again," writes Author Feibleman of the hero's sweetly frigid second wife, "by so much as the amount of cream in her morning coffee." He could have added that the hero himself does not alter by a jot, after a point early in the novel, and neither...
...pair. But it takes an extremely experienced artist to direct himself in a starring role, and even then the results usually leave much to be desired. His performance is too subdued, his staging indecisive and vague, and there is far too much stage business. He does not seem to have a total conception of the production; as a result, Michael and Agnes grow old not gracefully but spasmodically...
