...does each class appear statistically like the one ahead of it, if "quotas" are not used? There seem to be two answers. First, each man on the admissions committee feels in his own mind that a "good mix" is a necessary thing for Harvard College. If the admissions committee has just okayed nine consecutive students from a small town in Oregon, it will become wary of admitting more. Perhaps, as Whitla suggests, the advocate himself will not be able to find it in him to argue a tenth case enthusiastically. More important, there is something of a quota built into...

...activity by which an atom holds its place in the mass. Everyone studies all the time and worries whether everyone else isn't studying better, another imaginary cheese mistake. "Are you working again?" people ask each other in deprecation. It worries them to see others working, especially if they seem to be enjoying...

...this description with a bloodless dissertation on the importance of nature's balance. He is far too humane not to have been on the side of the bird. Indeed one of his most endearing traits is his capacity to react to animals as he would to people. Animals seem to find it endearing too. Like the bear who cheerfully followed Durrell home one afternoon. Gerry's long-suffering mother was sure that he could explain the attachment. "Explain?" his brother Larry exploded. "Explain? How do you explain a bloody great bear in the drawing-room?" If you happen...
