...analogies between keeping bees and raising adolescents are interesting. Both form highly developed societies that seem an alienated parody of our own. In both we glimpse, through the looking glass, intricate social lives and blind cruelty, the tendency to swarm occasionally, the secret language of waggle dances, the cliques, the stings, the feckless love lives of the drones...

...scoop, Doctor Octopus shakes it like a gorilla with a new toy, Hobgoblin tosses flaming pumpkins, Electro makes malefic use of a giant socket plug, Hydro Man spritzes everyone, and the scoop plummets what feels like hundreds of feet from the sky into concrete canyons that suddenly seem grand--Grand Guignol, that is. By the happy-ending salvation in a giant spiderweb, this out-of-body, out-of-mind experience reduces cynical theme parkers to burbling kids. Here in Germany, the majority of people seem to agree that firearms don't solve problems; they kill people. The remark of the person who said the massacre could have been avoided had the teachers at Columbine been armed was amazing. It was so cynical, so out of touch with reality, and showed a Dr. Strangelove kind of arms idolatry. I am a teacher myself. Shall I teach young people respect, tolerance and fairness while I outgun them? STEFAN BARTELS Dillingen, Germany...
