...marks only a shift in their public arena; they make no real recommitment to an academic life. Daniel Patrick Moynihan's recent interlude with us, which just ended as he took off for New Delhi, is one example of this, and John Kenneth Galbraith's current position as a seer-in-residence rather than as an economics professor is another. It seems questionable that the Henry Kissinger that Harvard would get back from Washington would be as useful to the University community as the one it sent to Nixon...

Last July, when Joseph Fielding Smith died at the age of 95, command of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints passed to a relative youngster. The new president, Harold Bingham Lee, was only 73-the youngest man to assume the mantle of "prophet, seer and revelator" for the Mormons since 1918. (Smith took office at 93.) Since his accession, both outsiders and members have wondered just how much innovation Harold Lee would bring to the rich, rapidly growing but still monolithic Mormon Church...

...best-known modern seer is undoubtedly the late Edgar Cayce, a devout Protestant, who made his predictions in a sleep-like trance. His long-range prognostications, such as the imminent rise of the lost continent of Atlantis and another in the Pacific called Lemuria, have become cult favorites, but Cayce in fact had many misses in his predictions. What gave him his credibility was a more limited but very special talent, the ability to diagnose illnesses of persons many miles away. Many Americans ?most, the optimistic would say ?still find the craze for prophecy foolish and even bankrupt...
