What keeps Just Looking merely predictable rather than boring are its characters. First-time film director Jason Alexander (yes, George from "Seinfeld") clearly loves his actors and the characters they portray. Every character, from Lenny to the old Italian assistant at the grocery store, is vivid and sharply delineated and the performances are sensitive and compelling. Ryan Merriman, as Lenny, does an especially impressive job. Gretchen Mol, who disappeared from Hollywood radar after being proclaimed the new "it" girl on the cover of Vanity Fair, has reinstated herself with her charming turn as Hedy...

...Former "Seinfeld" co-star Jason Alexander just directed his first feature film, Just Looking, which opens this Friday. I'm certainly glad...

...John Cassavetes had directed Seinfeld, it might have looked like this. Acerbic Seinfeld co-creator Larry David plays himself in a largely improvised series that follows a familiar pattern: David does something insensitive, lands in hot water and so on until we reach a crescendo of comic discomfort. The humor is minutely observed, but the improv reminds you how much nonactor Jerry Seinfeld benefited from comic backup and tight scripts. At his best, though, David can still make you laugh till you squirm...

Dogs are adorable--in theory. Take one in, though, and it can shed, stray, and worse. In its first two seasons Sex became a pop-culture icon for its astute bedroom politics, for the saucy Seinfeld banter (laced with corny double entendres) of its glam foursome, but above all for recognizing that a woman can live well without being at either end of a man's leash...
