Over southern Luzon stands a plume of ashy smoke (see cut). Mt. Mayon in the Philippines has again blown its graceful top. Most other recent seismic unrest (earthquakes and volcanoes) has also hit the shores of the Pacific: Peru, the Aleutians, Japan. Hasty guessers have therefore concluded that a wave of seismic shakes is burrowing molelike, and counterclockwise, around the Pacific. Having passed the Philippines, quivers and brimstone ought to strike the East Indies next, then the New Guinea region, then New Zealand, and back to Chile and Peru...
Exact purpose of the field explosions is to produce seismic reactions that can be calculated in order to provide a more accurate conception of the makeup of concentric shells that comprise the structure of the earth. It is hoped that further experiments will offer clues to the chemical changes produced by high pressures...
...underneath, forces of seismic change gathered strength. They were all the more eerie because most Frenchmen, exhausted by two titanic struggles in one lifetime, simply refused to face a third...
Darwin's atoll theory won fairly wide acceptance, but it was not checked conclusively until the Navy decided to explode two atomic bombs at Bikini Atoll last year. During the preliminary survey, scientists mapped the underground structure of the atoll by seismic methods: 126 depth charges exploded at various points on the bottom of the lagoon sent waves through the coral and underlying material. The denser the medium, the faster such waves travel. By measuring how long the waves took to reach listening instruments, the Navy's scientists could estimate the density of the rock at various depths...
Vast geologic forces stir in the Tuscarora Deep, a submarine trench facing Japan. Last week a section of the ocean floor gave way, creating a violent tremor. Ten-foot seismic waves of water thundered toward the main home island of Honshu, raced up the funnel neck of Kii Strait, dealt sleeping villages across 60,000 square miles six shattering blows in three hours. Tokyo newspapers called it the worst disaster since the great earthquake of September 1923, which killed 143,000. Said famed Fordham Seismologist Father Joseph J. Lynch: "A ripsnorter...
