Lockgroove's name is dangerously self-descriptive. It makes clear that band locks onto grooves. But it does not make clear that these grooves are more like the deep, black grooves of a rock record than the groovy grooves of jazz. The band's dense style may resemble the deep, black, concentric grooves of records, but their first release is actually on compact disc. The name of the CD is Rewired. That name is also descriptive; since the album was released in mid-1998, Lockgroove's sound is sure to have changed--to have been rewired, so to speak...
...midnight, the group announced its intentions upfront, kicking off with a long, looping guitar introduction (courtesy of guitarist Duane Koh '00) filled with feedback and distortion. The dreadlocked lead singer, Alvin McCottry '00, unfortunately sounded muffled throughout, drowned beneath a sea of distortion from the sometimes overly self-indulgent guitarists. Still, the group's drum-intensive cover of Nirvana's "Smells Like Teen Spirit" inspired manic pogoing among some of the faithful who had remained, even though their sped-up version lacked any of the slow, simmering moments that had made the original so menacing. Dickie's not always as naughty as the name suggests, but sometimes he's far worse. Jude Law is the consummate self-involved prick; he's best when playing dissipated rich boys like the wheelchair-bound himbo in Gattaca, men who would loathe themselves if they would take the time to bother...
...portray Tom Ripley as a gay man is risky, and not only for Matt Damon's career. As a man capable of murder on a bad day (don't worry, I'm not really giving anything away), a gay Thomas Ripley might become some terrible variation on the mythic self-hating homosexual serial killed--a queasy Andrew Cunanan done up in old-fashioned clothes. But the change actually produces all kinds of new tensions that deepen the emotional weight of the story. Tom's confused sexuality is just another expression of his place outside the privileged world of golden boys...
