...traditionally devoted to the human figure is to be practically alone among young contemporary sculptors. Most of Baskin's fellows base their sculpture on yesterday's innovations, shaping caved-out, semi-human figures a la Moore, skeletal ghosts a la Giacometti, allusive combinations of metal junk a la Stankiewicz, or totally abstract welded armatures a la David Smith. Baskin, a lone voice in this spiny desert, argues that "the only true originality any art can have is originality of content. If I tried to find a new way of doing sculpture, I'd be like any other...
...Makapan River in the Transvaal. The cave's original floor is travertine rock, on which lies more than 50 ft. of sedimentary material. In one of the layers, close to the floor, are bones of Australopithecus prometheus, a small, spry primate whom Professor Dart considers at least semi-human. Prometheus, he says, ate baboons, may have stood upright and may have possessed fire. On the other hand, apparently, he did not know how to make stone tools or weapons...
Father Was Human. Some 37 feet down, Father Ewing found Egbert. His little body must have been buried right at home by affectionate elders and gradually covered with material which lime-charged seepage turned to hard stone. He is an Aurignacian boy, genuinely human but following closely in period the semi-human Neanderthals. In fact, he may be a link between the two types. Perhaps his Aurignacian father captured a lowbrowed Neanderthal girl, kept her as a slave, and had a child...

Ghetto legend in Prague says that in the early 17th Century, a mysterious Rabbi Loew, crony of Emperor Rudolph II, constructed a semi-human statue-monster called the Golem (the "Strong") which, if Prague's Jews ever needed aid, would come to life and provide it. In 1920 this legend provided the material for one of the most horrifying pictures ever made. Produced by UFA (see p. 52), directed by Paul Wegener. who also wrote the scenario and played the title role, it showed the Golem on an expressionistic rampage (see cut). Last year. Production Manager...
...highly skillful. Now Agnes Rogers has arranged her New York into a book of photographs, assembled with superb judgment from the huge incoherent mass of subjects which the great city presents. Lower Manhattan at dawn, Scarsdalers waiting herd-like for the 8.52; a homeless drunk sprawled on the sidewalk, semi-human sardines jammed into the subway; Mrs. $25,000-a-year-executive smugly viewing the man-made greenness of the Bronx River Parkway; Miss $15-a-week dictation sponge engulfing a hectic ham-on-rye; sunshine on the glories of Park Avenue; the same sunshine on the littered, crowded alloys...
