...From there the movie begins a backwards loop to explain how John, who claims to have been lucky once, came to this unlucky point, a problematic storytelling tactic if you've cast Buscemi in the lead. We completely expect him to be a semi-hysterical mess standing under the unflattering glow of fluorescent lights. He was perfectly cast as Templeton the rat in Charlotte's Web and as Tony Soprano's shiftless, foolish cousin in The Sopranos. Not to mention Carl Showalter, aka, the wood-chipper victim, in Fargo. But a fondness for the actor keeps us attentive to writer/director...

...John is a semi-recovered gambling addict, who fled Las Vegas after some unnamed fiscal disaster and got himself a desk job at an insurance company in Albuquerque, New Mexico. The only good part of his boring job is sharing a cubicle wall with Jill (Sarah Silverman), a buxom administrative drone who has her own addiction issues revolving around compulsive collecting of smiley face paraphernalia. (This seems like recycled, or at least, unimaginative material, and Silverman is shamefully wasted on a character just there to be mocked). John's only chance at making more money is to accept a challenge...

This notice, which was spotted on the door of the Lampoon’s castle, announced that our favorite semi-secret Sorrento Square social organization that used to occasionally publish a so-called humor magazine is in violation of a city ordinance that requires property owners to remove snow and ice from their sidewalks promptly after a snowfall...

...Meyers demonstrates, as she did in Something's Gotta Give and The Holiday, an extraordinarily limited worldview. Her heroines are allowed just one problem, and it will never, ever include a lack of taste. Jane's semi-rural Santa Barbara home is a hydroponic dreamland, where tomatoes grow implausibly round and fully ripe in springtime. Her spacious, beautiful kitchen is filled with shelves of cake plates and creamy white platters, just waiting for this formerly unappreciated domestic goddess to fill them with homemade bounty. Producers of porn employ "fluffers" on their sets. I believe Meyers, as a producer of lifestyle...

...screen cascades down 18 stories and then spills in long folds across an adjoining plaza, like a metallic bridal train at a robot wedding. At Cooper Union the screen creates a concave facade that bows in many directions. Depending on the light, that steel skin, which has a low, semi-matte luster, can project either cheese-grater roughness or elegant shimmer - or, oddly, both. And the way it slopes forward in its upper and lower portions gives the building's principal façade an elastic thrust that's both graceful and forceful. At street level, steel trusses appear from...
