...main conspirators in this book are Seneca and his nephew Lucan the poet. The two police officials keep passing along intercepted copies of letters between Seneca and Lucan, and the two writers keep hacking away at the question "What is a writer's responsibility?" Seneca says, "A writer cannot change the world; his duty is to describe it." Then there's the chief police official, Tigellinus, who says, "A writer has no responsibilities, for responsibilities are the burden of power. He is, at best, an entertainer, like that trained bear we saw nodding its head and catching apples...

...frontiersman's helpmeet in building the new nation -wife and mother of pioneers. It was the Abolitionist movement before the Civil War that helped get American feminism under way. In working against slavery, women emerged as a political force. The 1848 Women's Rights Convention at Seneca Falls, N.Y., was the first of several to demand the vote, equal opportunity in jobs and education and an end to legal discrimination based...

Dundy, recognizing the de jure humanity of the American Indian. Donehogawa, born a chief of the once-powerful Seneca Iroquois, became a self-taught lawyer only to discover that Indians need not apply to the bar of New York, went on to become a civil engineer, a friend of Ulysses S. That idea dates back to circa 415 B.C.; the movement in the U.S. goes back little more than a century. The first major effort, led by Lucretia Mott and Elizabeth Cady Stanton, culminated in 1848 with the convocation of the Women's Rights Convention at Seneca Falls, N.Y. For that convention, Stanton drafted a Declaration of Sentiments, stating in part that "we hold these truths to be self-evident; that all men and women are created equal," and demanding the right to vote, to equal educational and vocational opportunities, and to an ending of legal discrimination against women. Except...

...Seneca's Oedpius is an exciting and challenging production. Much of the acting is very good. Shcila Hart as Iocasta and Jack Shea as Tiresias are particularly strong. Wakeen Ray-Riv's choreography is superb, and exploits the extremely-limited Agassiz stage to the fullest. Senclick's direction is intentionally upsetting. Yet it must be admitted that even a ritualized Theater of Cruclty cannot escape being theater. And as long as that is true, I prefer Sophocles's pretension to human reality to Seneca...
