...peace in the Middle East, we unfortunately find ourselves once again defending Israel's right to exist. During our stint as co-chairs of the Harvard Israel Public Affairs Committee, we grew used to defending Israel against cynical distortions of history, and often found ourselves engaged in the senseless task of producing a balance sheet of Palestinian and Israeli suffering. We had hoped that the famous handshake on the White House lawn was a sign of a new era of constructive dialogue. Sadly, we have been reminded by Ramy Tadros' article ("Israel's `Independence' Day," guest commentary...

What makes all the fretting even more senseless is that even in houses with high concentrations of Blacks, these students are still overwhelmingly in the minority. In 1993, the last time that the University released housing statistics that included racial breakdowns, the house that had the highest percentage of Black students was only 17 percent Black. Many of the Black students who live in the Quad have evidently decided that they want to enjoy the benefits of a strong, vibrant ethnic community. It was while he was in Mexico last year that Clary, 33, and his wife suffered a senseless tragedy: their toddler son died after falling out of a third-floor window. "We took some time off to heal after my son's death," says Clary, "but my dream never died. I still have the desire, and the ability, I think, to pitch in the majors...

Chan-whose Chinese screen name, Sing Lung, translates as "becoming the dragon"-is so fearless as to seem, by mere human standards, senseless. In Police Story he hitches a ride on a speeding bus by running up from behind, hooking an umbrella handle onto a window ledge and hanging on while fighting off a brood of bad guys. (Gape in envy, Keanu Reeves!) In The Armour of God II: Operation Condor he drives his motorcycle off a riverside pier and leaps off in midair to catch onto the net of a passing mechanical crane. (Page your stunt double, Mr. Seagal...

...seductive premise: the violence Malcolm saw as a tool of liberation had degenerated into the internecine violence that killed him, and now into a senseless blood feud. But by the weekend the case's lessons, and its prospects, looked less clear. The man expected to be the prosecution's key witness seemed to be more impeachable, at least on character, than anything yet seen at the O.J. Simpson trial. And the state's allegations had achieved what the passage of years had failed to do -- drawn the Shabazz family and Farrakhan into apparent agreement on at least one belief: that...
