...into the next century with photographic memories of John Paul II. The late-teenage boys and girls who gathered in great numbers to see him in Denver in 1993 will, many of them, be alive when John Paul II is dead in 50 years, and their recall will be sensual. I saw him in January, with the usual million people, including Fidel Castro. There was some trepidation about the Pope's health at the Sunday Mass. The Pope was cautiously introduced by Havana's Jaime Cardinal Ortega. We heard then the voice of the Pope. Not very expressive...
...metaphorical or literal is hard to decipher from this song, as it moves between the raunchy and the mundane quite freely. Some of its lyrics are downright sappy, such as "If love needs a reason/then mine is/I ain't been the same/since I met you baby." However, the sensual culinarity of "Butter," sandwiched between boring lyrics, does not get lost--if anything, it reaches a boiling point and turns explosive with an excellent use of pop instrumentals. "Butter" may be overtly sexual and superficial, but it does not melt away...
...anticipation by those four smallish string players that elevated the concert from music making to story telling. Adhering to Haydn's tenet that a modern string quartet "should engage the mind as well as the emotions," the Guarneri Quartet played a repertoire that alternated between being reflective and impetuous, sensual and contemplative. A standing ovation that included innumerable smiles and several open mouths spoke the result...
While the first act is filled with story telling and action, the second act is where the serious dancing actually takes place. Next comes the Chinese (tea), with two lead dancers accompanied by eight little girls with parasols; then a Marzipan shepherd and shepherdess, with four adorable little girls as sheep. The Russian variation is always the most exciting, as the five men jump, stomp and cheer in fine style...
...would be unfair to suggest that this adaptation of Bent is a total failure--its ambitiousness and intrinsically powerful subject matter aside, there are a number of marvelous moments in the film. The opening sequence, which captures the sensual decadence of a gay Berlin cabaret of the 1930s, is almost worth the admission price by itself. Titillating and visually gorgeous, it's heightened by an unexpected cameo: Mick Jagger, startlingly in his element as nightclub owner Greta (a.k.a. George), performs a throaty torch song in full drag whilst suspended on a platform from the ceiling, in a menacingly campy turn...
