When Author Nikos Kazantzakis died last year at 74, he was known to U.S. readers mostly for his novel Zorba the Greek, a flashing testament to the proposition that every minute of life should be lived to the sensuous, sensual hilt. At least twice, reportedly, he failed to win the Nobel Prize by the narrowest of margins. By taking for his own the name of Homer's poem, by adopting Odysseus as his own hero, Kazantzakis has underlined the audacity of his undertaking. His 33,333 lines measure its vastness. But the poem's real boldness lies...
...paintings show the white light and black-clad poor of Spain and Italy with tenderness if not much power. Cubism is perhaps her stumbling block; one can hardly see the people for the planes. But her semi-abstract sculptures come to terms with the wood in witty and sensuous ways. Woman and Child (see cut), hunched forms of a mother and her papoose, seem in a separate world, somewhere between the nature of a tree trunk and that of people. Why did she quit business for art? This is also the case with Stockhausen, as Robert Craft points out: "For example...

He freely confesses his lack of acting talent, but under proper direction he has produced some fine dramatic characterizations, e.g., Don José, Turiddu, Farrando in Così Fan Tutte. He has a big, warm, sensuous tenore robusto...
...imagery, the poet celebrates the sea as the ever-renewing source and symbol of life. In endless variations on this theme, Perse evokes man's grandest and loneliest moments, his immemorial past, his intimations of a nobler future. With its Invocation. Strophe, Chorus and Dedication-and its sensuous neopagan salute to raw nature-Seamarks reads a little like a drama put on for the approval of the gods on Olympus. A long section symbolizing union with the sea might pass for impassioned love poetry. The final evocation is one of renascence: "The javelins of Noon quiver in the gates...
