Professor Turner graduated with honors from the University of Wisconsin in 1884, and after a year's work on the staff of the Milwaukee "Sentinel," returned to the university as Instructor in History and English. Here he remained until 1888, teaching and at the same time pursuing advanced work in history under the late Professor William F. Allen '51, one of the pioneers in the development of historical instruction in American universities.
