...Iranian grievances, real and perceived, don't stop there. Tehran is convinced the U.S. or one of its allies was behind the March 2006 separatist violence in Iranian Baluchistan, which ended up with 20 people killed, including an IRGC member executed. And the Iranians believe there is more to come, accusing the U.S. of training and arming Iranian Kurds and Azeris to go back home and cause problems. Needless to say the Iranians are not happy there are American soldiers on two of its borders, as well as two carriers and a dozen warships in the Gulf. You call this...
...while I was reporting on the civil war then raging in the Indonesian province of Aceh, rebels of the separatist Free Aceh Movement (G.A.M.) opened fire on a car carrying me and three colleagues, almost killing us. Afterwards, furious, I called and text messaged my G.A.M. contact, code-named "Iskander," to tell him to get his trigger-happy men to stand down. ...rumors about the possible masterminds behind the crude but deadly attacks. Initial suspicion centered on Muslim insurgents, who have terrorized Thailand's south with unrelenting small explosions that have claimed nearly 2,000 lives over the past three years. But the insurgents, some of whom are fighting for a separatist homeland for the country's minority Muslims, have never brought their bombing campaign out of Thailand's south. At a press conference on Monday afternoon, interim Prime Minister Surayud Chulanont specifically discounted speculation that the terror attacks were planned by Muslim extremists, instead linking the bombs to "people who lost...
...Partitioning Iraq is a recipe for disaster. The civil war in Iraq would expand to engulf the whole region. No current or future government in Turkey would condone the emergence of a separate Kurdish entity in northern Iraq, as that would inflame the separatist tendencies of Turkey's Kurdish population. Other Arab countries would probably reject the possibility of another Shi'ite nation. Arguments in favor of partitioning Iraq are neoimperialist and do nothing beneficial for the region. Sait T. Tangor Ankara, Turkey...
