...pleasant surprise was the Cuban section. Its 40 items included the tenderest painting in the exhibition, a picture of three lost-looking children done in white, grey and sepia by a young artist named Fidelio Ponce de Leon,* and the most effective sculpture, a torqued Figure (see cut, p. 36) by handsome, 27-year-old Rita Longa. Significantly enough, Rita Longa is chief of the Section of Teaching and Art Appreciation in the Department of Culture under the Cuban Ministry of Education. This department was created after the overthrow of President Gerardo ("Butcher") Machado in 1933 and is regarded...
Like his friend, Louis Adamic, "Maxo" Vanka has a love of poor people and a tireless zeal in studying them. Among his sepia drawings were two that made many a visitor gulp with humanitarian rage: spots of sunlight on a wall under Brooklyn Bridge with bums standing in each spot for warmth; three old slatterns on an alley bench, one drunk and swollen, clinging to elegance with a shawl, one still sturdy and vicious. But the best things in the show were Artist Vanka's palette knife paintings, smooth, slightly van Goghish, brilliantly composed, of a Bowery poolroom...
...good. The story is very far-fetched, and suffers from an insipid happy ending; but Sigmund Romberg's excellent music, sung as only Jeanette MacDonald and Nelson Eddy can sing, together with a good supporting cast and the rich browns and delicate blues of the sepia-platinum photography, make the picture entirely worthy of its Easter-weekend billing...
This week Locw's presents two pictures of average merit by M. G. M. "The Bad Man of Brimstone," with Wallace Beery in the title role, is sort of a western a la mode, with sepia platinum filming as its only outstanding characteristic. The hot wastes of Arizona look well in this medium, as does Virginia Bruce, always more reminiscent of the rotogravure debutante than of the prairie mother. Yet if her striking coiffe and general showgirl demeanor make Miss Bruce an anachronism in any western, Mr. Beery, who has a way of making homicide seem unimportant, is also miscast...
...stage the Brown Man shows the White Man how his jazz-age amusement should be done. Louis Armstrong, the King of Swing, sounds too much as if he had a sore throat, but he is amply redeemed by his orchestra. And the rest of the sepia troupe, notably the Mills Brothers, are most exhilarating indeed. Up and away to the Metropolitan; the show this week is first-rate stuff...
