...shootout in the capital Dili should not have been such a surprise. When most multinational peacekeepers flew out of Dili in the years after East Timor's formal independence in 2002, the world considered the country a victory of U.N. nation-building. The U.N. chief in East Timor, Sergio Vieira de Mello, was asked to duplicate his work as special envoy for Iraq (he was later tragically killed in Baghdad), and East Timor's former President Xanana Gusmão (now Prime Minister) declared that his country could be a model for other young, developing countries. He had scored a recent hit with Pero Te Vas a Repentir, or "But You Will Have Regrets," a love song so catchy that half the country was humming it. Gomez was abducted after a concert in his native Michoacan state, beaten and burned and then strangled with a plastic cord...

...European Automobile Manufacturers Association says the industry is already making huge investments to meet green targets. "It is unrealistic to believe this can be done by 2012," said ACEA president Sergio Marchionne. "The announced legislative framework will not be ready before 2009: this leaves the industry too little time to apply by 2012; the cars of 2012 will be on the drawing table tomorrow." The group also points to studies, including the Stern report, which suggest that vehicle technology is one of the least cost-effective ways of bringing down CO2 emissions from transport...
