...such a situation, the St. John's congregation expected Glemp would have to address at least the emotionally charged cross confrontation in his evening sermon. At last he did. The travelogue had droned on for 15 minutes when the analogy suddenly became unmistakable. Among the Polish emigrants he had visited in South America, the Cardinal declared, "everywhere beside the white eagle [Poland's national symbol] there is a cross. Nobody renounces either the cross or the eagle because they know that these two symbols, united for centuries, represent Poland...

...Sunday sermon at the small parish church in Elles-borough last week concentrated on the evils of wealth, but at least one member of the congregation, Mark Thatcher, 30, may have been distracted. The son of Britain's Prime Minister was visiting Chequers, the P.M.'s country estate, so that Dad and Mum could entertain his new American girlfriend, Karen Fortson, 24. She is the daughter of Ben Fortson, a Fort Worth oil magnate, and murmurings from both families suggest that a match may be entirely suitable. Justice is a social question, while forgiveness introduces a transcendent element: love. Weighing the injunction in the Sermon on the Mount to turn the other cheek, Martin Luther concluded that an individual ought to obey the command, but a government should not. There are two orders, that of the law and that of the Gospel. One forgives in one's heart, in the sight of God, as the Pope did, but the criminal still...

...Malatesta based the sets and costumes on paintings by Fra Angelico, Giotto and Matthias Grünewald. As staged by Sandro Sequi, scenes are played in small, diorama-like boxes to emphasize the work's distant, legendary quality. The only serious dramatic defect is the sixth scene, the sermon to the birds, which was intended to be the high point. What was supposed to be a grand laser spectacle representing the flight of the birds in the shape of a cross is instead something more suitable to a light show in a down-at-the-heels disco...
