...Frederick Grandy Budlong, rector of Christ Church, Greenwich (reputedly richest U. S. parish), appointed last autumn to be Bishop Coadjutor of Connecticut (TIME, Sept. 21). Consecrator: Presiding Bishop Perry, assisted by nine prelates, among whom was Bishop James Edward Freeman of Washington, who said in the consecration sermon: "We literally pipe to the people, but they do not dance. . . . Our ministry is all too often identified with a type that represents culture and wealth...

Churchmen who visited last week's preview were somewhat captious. They listened to five selections by Westminster Choir, a solo by a Miss Lorene Hodap, a scripture reading by Dr. Erdman, a sermon by Dr. Poling defending present-day Youth. Studio atmosphere was reverent: some smoked before, but none during the showing. Afterwards, a few clergymen criticized the choir: it sang too well, over-balancing the rest of the program, and there were too many close-ups of comely Westminster choir girls. Lipstick was apparent. One gentleman observed a glaring omission: there was no prayer! Hastily Promoter Rodeheaver...

...life-saving idea came to Dr. Warren before the 1907 panic, while he held a Baptist pastorate in Manhattan. He preached a sermon against suicides in which he cried: "I wish that all who be lieve that death is the only solution to their problems would give me a chance to prove them wrong." Next day a dozen appeared for proof. Next day more. Fortunately he had sufficient money to surrender his pastorate, raise his daughter and two sons, and devote himself entirely to his Save-a-Life League. Cases which a country rest might cure he takes...

...Best seller: A Message to Garcia. This "literary trifle," as he called it, Hubbard wrote one night after dinner when Bert II had remarked that Rowan was the real hero of the Spanish-American war.† The Sage of East Aurora made this incident the peg for a passionate sermon on loyalty, duty, alertness. Short & snappy, it is still the gogetters' ABC, one of the first bits of advertising copy at which the Sage later became so successful. Translated into 45 languages and dialects, "more copies of it have been distributed than any piece of writing except the Bible...

...people were estimated to listen in every Sunday night on "Sunday at Seth Parker's." Mr. Lord is smooth-faced, suave, lively. As Seth Parker, he puts on a white wig and false beard, drawls genially and devoutly, becomes a skinny, saintly Yankee sage. He delivers a little sermon, pointed up with earthy rural witticisms. Leading members of his cast of ten singer-actors are "Ma" Parker, Capt. Bang (famed for his rendition of "Crossing the Bar"). Lizzie Peters, a comic spinster (played by Mrs. Sophia Mecorney Lord, mother of two), and Cefus, Lizzie's half-witted brother...
