...Negro, two whites and a Filipino-Chinese assist him), and the congregation is even more disparate: foreign students from the University of Illinois' nearby Chicago Circle Campus, poor people from the neighborhood, an increasing number of hippies and occasional young whites from the suburbs. Worship services are simple: a sermon, followed by a choice of four discussion groups, ons in each corner of the hall. Despite his social concern, Mains insists that his mission is primarily spiritual. ''I think." he says, "that man has changed mainly through personal relation with...

THERE IS A scene in Medium Cool where Martin Luther King's voice appears over a television in some hot Chicago apartment on a summer night. It is the speech about having been to the top of the mountain, and hearing that tremulous sermon again reminds me that history is a process of forgetting. The dim past surges up before us, events which had an aura that defined them are obscured. Metaphysical Blackout. Beckett's friend and mentor, James Joyce, once said: "Here is life without God. Just look at it!" In a way, Beckett's entire work is an agonized sermon on that text. In his world, the machinery of existence seems to be grinding to a halt. The titles Krapp's Last Tape, Endgame and Malone Dies suggest a civilization with terminal cancer. The suffocating womb becomes a death trap: the urns encasing the characters in Play, the mound of earth piled up to the heroine's neck in Happy Days, the ashcans of Endgame...
