...bonny, bonny banks of Loch Ness, six Scots, presumably of sound mind and eyesight, espied the lake's most celebrated resident frolicking in its blue waters. From one sea-serpent watcher came the latest description of the elusive, shy Loch Ness Monster: "I saw several humps and a long, thin, brown-colored tail in the middle of the lake. The backwash was about the length of three fishing boats...

...Serpents in the Depths? Despite the new outburst of exploration, many mysteries remain. The creatures that live in the depths of the ocean are still only slightly known, and they may include the famed sea serpents of salty folklore. Sea-serpent sightings have diminished of late, but Revelle thinks this may be because fast, noisy, modern ships make poor platforms for serpent sighting. Sperm whales dive for gigantic squid up to 50 ft. long that live at great depths and have never been captured by man. Why should not the squid have companions down there...

...Place to Run is a kind of composite of the Southern political rabble-rouser with glints of Bilbo and Talmadge, Huey Long and Orval Faubus. Sixtyish, red-gallus-snapping Gene Massie is as loyal as a barracuda, as lecherous as a fruit fly, and as fork-tongued as the serpent who got the first woman's vote from Eve. He bills himself as "the WHITE people's choice" for Governor, and he runs on a platform that has served him ever since he was a two-bit sheriff: "Fightin' the niggers and fightin' th' aristocrats...

...pies begins each picture with a cloudy idea, possibly just a word, such as "serpent" or "tree." In working, he may decide to paint only the skin of the serpent, or the texture of wood. This usually involves mixing marble dust or sand with his dark pigments: the result is like a shallow bas-relief with muted colors suggestive of the earth's own crust. Tàpies confesses to "struggling" with his materials, then intently observing the outcome: "I am the first spectator before my canvas. I am a normal man. If it touches me, it will touch...
